Liam Canham for Taunton Deane #GE2019

Now that the No Deal threat has been neutralised, Labour at last have the chance to set out our bold vision to transform society for the good of the many, and eject Johnson and his disastrous Government from power.

Last week, Taunton Deane CLP selected the excellent local candidate Liam Canham to stand for Labour in the upcoming General Election, now confirmed by Parliament to be held on December 12th.

Here’s what Liam has to say:

“I have spent the majority of my career working in the public sector, predominantly within the field of social housing and local authority service. As a result, I have seen first hand the damage that core Tory policies, such as welfare reform and wider austerity, have had upon our community. I also have experience volunteering  with the Police across Somerset as a Special Constable and until recently served on the Board of Trustees of a homelessness charity in Taunton.

“Again these experiences have brought me face to face with the resulting consequences of years of Tory austerity, which has adversely affected resources within the public sector to provide fit and proper services such as Adults and Children’s Social Care, a well functioning healthcare system and good quality ‘affordable’ housing to name but a few.

“I joined the Labour Party approximately 4 years ago following my leaving the Police, having been a supporter of the Party’s values for a number of years. Whilst originally I had not planned to take such an active role both within politics and in the party, in those 4 years I have already stood for election both with County and District elections. This has been as a result of our poor representation within Taunton Deane, both from our MP and our Council and the feeling that the people of Taunton Deane deserves better.

“When I look back through the history of Labour governments and the achievements that have been realised, from the establishment of the NHS, ending of the death penalty, the establishment of the Open University (of which I myself am currently benefiting from) and the introduction of the national minimum wage, I feel a sense of sorrow as to where the Tories have taken us over the past 9 years. However, this sorrow ignites a fire within me to fight for the investment in people, investment in services and investment within the country.

“I am extremely proud and indeed humbled to be chosen as the representative for Taunton Deane and vow to do my utmost to fight for Labour representation of Taunton Deane and indeed a Labour government.

Dear Liam Canham, congratulations on your selection. Bravo sir.
Are you expecting to win in Taunton Deane or are you resigned to being the victim of tactical voting and right wing somnambulism, I wonder?
I’m losing the ‘tactical voting’ argument on the Taunton XR page. I have no ammunition. I think most don’t even know who you are. ”Does Labour even have a candidate?”, ”Yes, this year they’ve got Liam Canham.” I see that you don’t have a Facebook page. I want to hear a loud and passionate voice declaring the terrible urgency of the climate emergency, promising the Green New Deal for Taunton Deane, damning this cruel decade of austerity, making plain the new EU deal and People’s Choice, and declaring that you and only you are the answer for a better life here, for us locals, rural and townies. I am desperate to vote Labour, I joined the party to vote Jeremy Corbyn in as leader. Gideon Amos and Rebecca Pow must be overwhelmed with confidence, compassion and common sense. I need you, we need you to shine so brightly that TD turns red. Thank you.

Yes, I agree with you. There have been multiple leaflets from Lib Dem, and conservative, through my door….but no labour. It was the same in 2017. I find this so so worrying. I have emailed Liam to find out what plans there are to get canvassing going. I didn’t even know who the labour candidate was….I had to google it! This is the fight of our lives, and labour need to be voicing themselves properly in Taunton Deane.

Hello Louisa, I’m Mike, the campaign coordinator for Liam’s campaign, so the issues you raise are definitely my pigeon!.

Let me put your mind to rest straight away, we have a dynamic campaign focused solely on maximising the vote for Labour and Liam in Taunton Deane.

Every single household in the consitiuency will recieve a labour election address. We will be running street stalls in all the main shopping areas and doing targeted leafleting of the our main support. We will be holding the Tories and the Lib Dems to account at Hustings and we will be challenging the story that it is a two horse race between them.

We have advanced signifficantly over the last three elections; doubling our vote share on each occaision to a current 15% of the vote. Don’t be fooled by dodgy graphs in election leaflets that might be put out be other parties; Labour is advancing here!. Not only that but we strongly believe that the decision of the Green party to stand down will increase our vote significantly. We have a very strong green New Deal policy and are also offering a second Brexit referendum. These are, I believe, policies much closer to the Green Party then the Lib Dems are offering.

We also are building a strong campaign in social media and I would recommend that you visit our facebook / twitter pages to see more of that. Please see: and

Today was the official launch of Liam’s campaign and activity will pick up from here on in.

I strongly agree with you that “This is the fight of our lives, and labour need to be voicing themselves properly in Taunton Deane”. The position of the national and local labour party is quite straightforward. It is that voters who support labour policies and want a labour government should vote for the Labour candidate. I think in this way the labour vote is maximised across the country and it is the way to get a Labour government. In short the party’s policy and postition is “Vote Labour”.

I hope you find this response addresses your concerns and look forward to meeting you at one of the campaign events where we can talk about this more if you have any further queries.
